Creating My Web Folio

There are lot of parts to a web folio, and at first it was pretty overwhelming to assemble one. However, the creation process forced me slow down an to carefully read the reviews from both Dr. Paterson and my peers again. This was a rewarding process, and made me carefully think about all the works I’ve created throughout the course. It also helped highlight the areas I still need to work on. (One particular area is remember to use a “YOU” attitude).

I was surprised to discover during the process of revising that my technical communication skills had improved. I’ve already completed a previous degree and had a career for a few years, so I was assuming that my skill level would remain about the same. But there is a difference in quality of my writing between the first assignment, the technical definitions, and the final assignment, the formal report. I’m more concise, use fewer pronouns, and seem to be communicating to my audience more effectively.

Creating the web folio also gave me the chance to further explore the UBC Blogs service. Previous to this course, I was unaware that UBC provided a host for blogs. Experimenting with different layouts to meet the needs of my web folio was an enjoyable experience. Each time I tried a new layout, I had to consider if it would appropriate for my web folio audience and readers. As I plan to work in the tech industry, website design appropriateness is something I will have to consider in the future. Building a web folio helped me become more aware of digital design.

Overall, creating my web folio was a satisfying process. This is the final post before the web folio is complete. I can say there is a sense of pride looking back at the technical skills I have gained throughout this course, and I look forward to employing my new skills in my future career.
