Happy Thursday!

3 quick points that summarize my LIFE at the moment

1. I can’t believe October is almost here. It’s that time of year again… Tis time to get sick. These days, I’m loaded with neocitran, tylenol and boxes of kleenex. Nothing screams October more than the sound of hackling coughs and sneezes in a lecture. 🙁

2. Yuck midterms are just around the corner and I will not be defeated again…like last year. I’m starting early. For those taking chem 233, I just wanted to share a quick link: It has some tips on how to come out of the course alive. Hopefully you’ll find it helpful?

3. Two days left to vote for SUS elections. If you’re in science, you’re already paying some $20 towards SUS. So why not take some ownership of your undergraduate society and vote for YOUR representatives. Voting is tomorrow from 10:30 to 4pm and Friday 11 to 12pm. Results will be posted Friday evening. PS: It wouldn’t hurt to vote me for G.O.

I’m 19 going on…90?

This so-called “pivotal moment of my life” calls for a blog post. Because guess who just turned 19 yesterday?

Thank you everyone for the lovely birthday wishes. <3 It means so much to me. Love you guys.

I had an amazing day at West Ed. Super chill and relaxed, just the way I like it. Hit up the WATER SLIDES with my little brother. What can I say? I guess I’m still a kid at heart. Plus, road trips, good food and even better company. Couldn’t ask for a better way to spend a birthday.

Sorry to disappoint. But contrary to the smack loads of comments on my facebook wall on the expected agenda for the evening… I did not hit up Caprice, Fabric or downtown at all for that matter. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t feel like it and I’m going to say that it’s not really my thing anymore. But of course, school’s just around the corner and with school comes the parties. So here’s the “…going on 90” part: This is my attempt to play the grown-up figure (my mother would be proud) and probably the only time I’ll ever lecture you. So listen up, you’ll thank me later.

Spend your Saturday nights at Irving or Koerner (not Koerner's). Sleep at 10 pm sharp. Don’t go to the frat party. Avoid Granville Street. Don’t give a thought about Pit Night. Stay away from Wreck.

…you’re probably rofl by now. Gotcha! I may be “going on 90”, but I’ll still be a cool 90 year old. I get that you’re in university to learn + have fun. And since everything I listed above not to do, you will inevitably find yourself at one day… here’s a list of resources to stay SAFE while having FUN. (aka things I wish I knew in first year).

1. Campus BluePhones

Not just for emergencies, press the button on the big blue phone to be linked to UBC Campus Security 24/7 for access to information, directions and safewalk. BluePhones are also located in some campus elevators.

Blue Chip cookie for the first person who can list all the locations of the BluePhones on campus. I know I walk by them all the time but as big and blue as they are, for some reason you never remember their location. So courtesy of Mr. Paul Wong, Manager of Community Relations at UBC Campus Security, here’s a list:

2. AMS Safewalk

Save the number: 604-822-5255 (direct line).
Available anywhere on campus. Savewalk operates 7pm to 2am nightly. Call them on their direct line or ask for Safewalk at one of the bluephones.

3. UBC Campus Security
Save the number: 604-822-2222.
Available 24/7 also look for those Campus Security Patrol cars in case of emergency. Campus Security also deals with lost and found as well as all these cool resources I never knew about: jumpstart, key watch, bike security, property engraving as well as putting invisible ink on your textbook. Check their website for more info. Campus Security also provides a free safety whistle, pick yours up at the Imagine Day Carnival or at their office, 2133 East Mall (next to Bookstore).

4. UBC Shuttles (C20, C21)

Would you rather trudge through campus from Vanier to the bus loop in your heels? Or would you rather just take the C-20? That’s what I thought, and also the safer option. A very popular mode of transportation on Friday/Saturday nights, expect full buses! C-20 servicing Thunderbird, Totem, Ritz, Hawthorn, Marine + Vanier. C-21 servicing Fairview and Hamptons. 5. Yellow Cab
Save the number: (604) 681-1111
Eventually when you get brave enough to venture downtown. Do yourself a favour and add one more number into your cell. In case you can’t find your way to the N-17 (direct nightbus to UBC). Expect $30+ cab fares from downtown to ubc.

Facebook Withdrawal

When a facebook addict swears of facebook, withdrawal symptoms become present almost immediately and will continue to grow in severity over the course of time.


Such symptoms could include (but not limited to):


Anxiety
Depression
Irritable
Loss of appetite
Rapid heart rate
Clammy skin
Insomnia
Hallucinations

If facebook withdrawal is suspected (presence of any number of these symptoms), please remain calm and seek medical help immediately.


HAHA. Just Joking.



But, I admit I’m a facebook addict. (Hey, they say the first step is realizing/admitting it, right?) So on day 1 of back to school, I decided to take it to the EXTREME and swear of facebook for the term. I got a friend to change my password since I apparently don’t have any self control. If anyone is considering this, warning: IT’S FREAKING HARD! & 2 weeks later, it’s still freaking hard! (Not proud to admit this, but I cracked today and after bribing my friend for the password, I got some fb time…tsk tsk shame on me) Damn I lasted 2 weeks, anyone up for a little challenge? Go ahead, try to break my record…IF YOU DARE. HAHA

Anyways, I’m overlooking the little blunder from this evening and I’m back onto my strict no-fb lifestyle again. GO ME. Wonder how long I’ll last this time?

1 day? 2 weeks? 1 month? The term? Any bets?


PS: BTW, I’m feeling much better since the after math of snowboarding episode.

The Holidays

Fantastic so far. Except for a certain rude awakening on the SSC website. Hint: Might have to do with courses and marks. (Yes admit it, that did send shivers down your spine) ‘Nuff said.

The holidays just wouldn’t be the holiday without:

1. The wonderful airport, holiday time. Because there is just no better way to kick off the season than a 3 hour delayed flight, annoying kids who like to kick the back of plane seats and of course, the practical definition of air travel: the shrilling babies.

2. Meeting up with all your friends from home. & realizing how many people you’ve lost touched with over 4 short months and how some people just seem to fade away. But the people that matter, the important ones, well they always got your back and nothing will ever change that.

3. A white Christmas. Never though I’d ever say that. I think snow is overrated, never been a huge fan. But after being in the city that never stops raining for the past 4 months, snow is nice change. (Be jealous all you Vancourites)

4. The 5 am lines outside BestBuy on Boxing Day. Because the holiday season is about giving to everyone…yourself included. (for all the gadgets that you didn’t get on Christmas)

5. Ringing in the New Year. Whether you choose to spend it low key with a quiet night in, or go all out with the fancy dress and the champagne or somewhere in between. I think it’s all about celebrating the past and upcoming year with the people you care about. Forget about that new years resolution, it starts TOMORROW. Tonight’s all about you.

6. The Resolution. I am guilty of being one of those people, who set ridiculous goals each year resulting in inevitable failure after a few short weeks. Why should this year be any different? Sooo 1. Be on time and 2. Exercise more…or cut down on the Starbucks.

7. The return trip. Wow just when I thought airports couldn’t get any better…The late airplane terrorist stunt has reported to leave planes cancelled, tighter security and longer wait times. Hopefully Canadian flights aren’t too bad, I guess I’ll find out firsthand on Sunday.

8. Back to UBC. In 4 days time. I don’t even want to think about it. Don’t get me wrong, I MISS Vancouver and all the people. I miss shopping, white spot, rez life, fire alarms at 1am and I can even put up with the rain. But TERM 2?!? ewwww.


BOTTOM LINE: I could use a longer winter break. On the bright side, reading week is only 46 days away.
