DRAFT:

Musqueam Medicinal Forest Garden and Walk

Musqueam, the traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people descended from the cultural group known as the Coast Salish, have lived in their present location for thousands of years, it is on this land that the First Nations House of Learning sits. Musqueam people moved throughout this traditional territory using the resources the land provided for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering, to maintain their livelihood. The Musqueam people still use these resources for economical and traditional purposes. Through the Musqueam Medicinal Forest Garden and Walk project, the communities of Musqueam and UBC will collaborate to this uncover and recognize this history. Long established Indigenous plants adjacent to the Longhouse will be highlighted and new plantings will focus on Musqueam medicinal plants. Plantings around the Longhouse and walkways leading to and including the Museum of Anthropology will feature plants with interpretative signage about the peoples that live off this land and the plants that sustained and healed them. Signs will include hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and English names, information about uses, scientific species and family names, source of information, and logo of key contributors; additional information about the plants and their uses by First Peoples will be accessible through an online feature. The project team will include volunteers from UBC and Musqueam communities with an anticipated opening of October 8th, 2015 at the First Nations Longhouse. From the casual passerby to an educational program this project will engage people with a wide range of interests and backgrounds, in recognizing the history and significance of the plants and people who have always lived on this land.

Key contributors of this project: UBC’s First Nations House of Learning, Musqueam Indian Band, Department of Botany, UBC Botanical Garden, and UBC’s  Indigenous Research Partnership.
