Introduction

Welcome everyone to this set of activities on our quest to learn more about light! In this lesson you will be working with others and will be responsible for contributing what you know already, helping to come up with a question to do with light, conducting research, and reporting your findings. More about that later!

For the moment, your first job will be to tell us what you know already!

You will need:

1 11×17 piece of chart paper
4 markers (different colours, one per person)

On the piece of paper, draw the following:

Make sure you leave a good size circle in the middle!

As a group assign one part of the placemat to each member. Consider the following questions:

Where does light come from?

How does light travel?

What does light have to do with the colours we can see?

Record all your ideas in your section of the placemat.

Once you have done this, look for common ideas among you all and record those in the center.

As you do this, note if there was any information that:
• did not agree
• made you wonder about something

Record what questions emerge from your discussion about what you know about light.

Be ready to share your ideas in about 10 minutes!
