Comment: Stella Cho’s Blog “Gender Equality in Business”

Stella Cho’s post on gender equality in business has grabbed my attention on a serious issue that occurs in the real world. I applaud Emma Watson for her brilliant speech as it is one of the most male inclusive gender equality speech ever given. It saddens me to see that something this vital and frequent has to be relatable and delivered by a celebrity to get noticed. Watson does not try to take this opportunity to further and grow her popularity but instead expose some light on these serious issues. By using her celebrity status to get the attention, she reveals and relates on these inequality matters. Her “HeForShe” campaign sheds light on sexism as well as males supporting gender equality under the banner of name “feminism.” The campaign also aims to eliminate the negative connotation of “feminist” and “feminism.”

Some people may find it weird why I’m talking about gender equality when I’m already the “dominant” sex. But as a male, I respect females immensely and I see them as equal. I believe both sexes should have equal rights and equal opportunities. Unfortunately, this is not the case in the real or business world. Women are often passed over in favor of men due to the stereotype that men can flourish and accomplish more than women. White women in the United States on average earn $0.77 to a male’s dollar. Part of this wage gap is due to problems such as unpaid maternity leave and promotions for men. This does not even touch the grounds of women of color or disabilities, which are even worse. Female employees are denied promotions and are told to step back and return to their roles. Promotion for a man is like riding an elevator to success whereas for a female, she has to climb the knotted rope from gym class. For some people, embracing the concept of gender equality is difficult. Males have been seen as the dominant species ever since the Earth was born. But everyone should be respected and seen equal, regardless of gender or color.
