Outweek – Board Games Night + Queer U

Outweek is just around the corner! Check out their Facebook page for a list of all the events happening at UBC from Feb 4-9, including a workshop by Our City of Colours, a storytelling workshop, HIV & STI rapid testing, and more. There are two events that might be of particular interest to grad students:

Outweek – Grad Student Board Games Night
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 7th, 7-11pm

Each February, UBC raises the Rainbow Flag in support of LGBQTTI students, faculty, and staff. Check our the Facebook event page here for a schedule of events organized by Pride UBC. [The Network] is hosting Board Games Night for grad students on Thursday, February 7th, 2013. We will have lots of games of various genres, from The Settlers of Catan to Scrabble to Taboo to Storming the Castle (the Princess Bride-themed board game…). Bring a few dollars if you want to share pizza. Friends and partners are welcome. Contact queergrads.ubc@gmail.com for the address!

Outweek – Queer U conference
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 9th, 9-6pm

A graduate student conference showcasing the research being done on gender(s) and sexuality(ies). Come support fellow grad students presenting their research, and/or learn more about what people are thinking right now on these topics… Bobby Noble is presenting as a keynote. See the website for a full schedule.

The conference is followed by a wine and cheese reception!

February First Friday + Queer U

Yay 2013! Join us at The Wolf and Hound on Friday, February 1 for our first get-together of the year. We will be there from 6-8 so don’t hesitate to drop by at any point, whether you’re a regular, you’ve never been, or you’ve just started grad school.

You can let us know that you’re coming by RSVPing on Facebook, or you can just show up. 🙂

The Wolf and Hound is located at 3617 West Broadway, between Dunbar and Alma.

Queer U is coming up!

The full schedule for the conference has just been released. Bobby Noble is giving what sounds like a very exciting keynote talk entitled “Edgy Bodies: Porn Pedagogies, Porn as Method.”

The conference is happening on Saturday, February 9, from 9 to 6, and is followed by a wine and cheese reception. It’s a great way to hear about the work that grad students are doing in the area of gender(s) and sexuality(ies) at UBC and beyond… We hope to see you there!

December newsletter

First Friday Social: Friday November 30th 6:00-8:00 p.m

December’s First Friday social will be held on Friday, November 30th at The Wolf and Hound.  Come join us for a drink and some food before we enter exam season!  If you have joined us in the past you know there will be good people and conversation.  If you’re new, why not come out and meet some new grad students from all areas of the university?  Yes, we know that this Friday is technically not the first Friday of December, but since many people are busy or away next month, we thought we would get a head start.  Look for the area with the rainbow flag, or call Alexis at 778-847-0773 if you have trouble finding us.

Call for Papers – Queer U conference

As part of Outweek (Feb 4-9), Pride UBC is organizing Queer U, an annual graduate-level academic conference on sexualities and genders. The conference centers on bringing the research and work of graduate students and established scholars from across the West Coast of North America and beyond to a broad audience in an attempt to foster understanding and discussion.  The deadline to submit an abstract has been extended to December 5th.  Visit blogs.ubc.ca/queeru for more information.

A Christmas Carol in Gay Apparel – a play by the Leaping Thespians

The Leaping Thespians presents their parody of A Christmas Carol, with a lesbian twist!  The ghost of Marley is a college girlfriend who visits Crooge many years later. Marley admits to her own past homophobia and urges Crooge to come out. Her warning is followed by visits from the Ghosts of Lesbians Past, Present and Future.  One of The Network’s members is performing in (and helped write) the production, so show your support!  leapingthespians.ca/ChristmasCarolInGayApparel.html

Location for November First Friday

See you at The Speakeasy downtown (on Davie between Bute and Jervis) for our next First Friday!

We will meet there on November 2 from 6-8pm.

Queer U 2013 CFP

Queer U is an annual interdisciplinary student academic panel organized during Outweek, which is a week of queer events that Pride UBC puts together.

You can find the CFP for the next edition over at the Queer U website!

Hello, school year 2012-13

An another school year has officially started… welcome to everyone who’s starting at UBC, and welcome back to everyone else!

Don’t miss our first First Friday of the year next month; it’s a great way to meet new people and/or catch up on what everyone’s been doing this summer. See you at the Wolf and Hound at 6pm on Oct 5.

Also, we have a new brochure for you that you check out and/or circulate freely.

No First Friday in April – see you in May!

We have decided not to organize a First Friday in April since we didn’t have enough people from the organizing committee who could commit this month. So we will be celebrating the end of the school year at our next get-together in May, at The Wolf and Hound in Kitsilano.  See you there!

PS. If you would like to get involved in the organizing committee, email us at queergrads.ubc [at] gmail.com. We can always use some help. 🙂

Out in Academia

Pride UBC presents:

OUT IN ACADEMIA
A panel on being queer and/or trans in the academy

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be an openly queer (LGBTQ) person working in the academy?
How queer-friendly are universities as a workspace?
How different is it to be out across departments and over time?
How do you negotiate heteronormativity in the classroom or research lab?

Whether you are planning on having an academic career or not, we invite you to come hear about the experiencesof openly “out” professors and post-docs from all over UBC campus (including: Sociology, Psychology, Law, Zoology, Asian Studies, and Computer Science). There will be plenty of time for discussion, so that you can have all your questions answered.
Join us on MARCH 23, 4:30-6 in BUCH B318.
Free refreshments and delicious snacks provided.
