Networking Event a Success!
Last month we hosted a networking event downtown in lieu of our regular First Friday event.  Queer students and researchers from UBC, Simon Fraser, and VCC mingled with professionals from the community.  Over 80 people attended, and many friendships and connections were forged.  We are looking forward to hosting more events like this one in the future.

Second Friday 14th March 2014 6pm

For our next event on Friday March 14th at Heaven’s Door (formerly the Jupiter lounge) on Davie street at 6pm, The Network would like to extend the invitation to the group and other students at UBC, SFU, Capilano, BCIT, Emily Carr, VCC etc. Also, we would like to invite any graduated professionals from any university, alumni and anyone else who could benefit from this to network with the graduate students at UBC. Everyone in the community is welcome including those who are new to Vancouver and would love to meet some great folks!

This event was a great success last year. These are informal gatherings that often draw attendance of up to 20-40 people. They are now fairly well established and advertised via our mailing list and through the graduate student society at UBC. We believe this is a good chance for interaction between those early and late in their careers. We currently draw students from a wide variety of backgrounds including, but not limited to, psychology, business, education, library science, engineering, computer science, physics, biology, ecology, gender studies, law, music and medicine. Please feel free to invite anyone you feel might be interested.

Address: 1216 Bute Street, Vancouver

Queer Grad Student Retreat on Bowen Island

The Network Steering Committee has organized an exciting and relaxing retreat for queer grad students, professional students and post-docs for the weekend of September 27-29, 2013. We will be going to Bowen Island (a short and scenic boat trip from Vancouver) full of natural beauty and amazing views.

The retreat will include fun activities such as:
a 2-hour guided sea kayaking trip (included in price)
a social reception with activities and prizes
an easy hike around the lake OR an optional mountain excursion
an evening around the campfire
tasty group meals, including a BBQ
time to hang out and get to know each other
Additionally, we’ll spend a little time planning where we would like this group to go in the coming year. The cost will include food, 2 drink tickets, lodging, all activities, and a chartered ferry to the island. Shared accommodations are in cozy cabins and yurts.

The retreat will be held at the Xenia Centre, a dynamic, gorgeous, and peaceful place featuring a sauna, a labyrinth, a giant old growth tree, and a friendly pig, among other charms.

Space is limited to 22 guests, which will include both current and new Network members. All LGBTQA grad students and allies are welcome. If you’ve never made it to a Network event before this is a great time to get to know a diverse group of fabulous and friendly folks.

The total cost for the 2-night, all inclusive retreat is $190 and the time to sign up is now! Space is limited. To reserve a spot, click here. Thanks to our sponsors, the Graduate Student Society and the Office of the Vice President [Students], for helping to subsidize the costs.

Of course feel free to contact us with any questions or for info on accessibility.

Queer U is coming up!

December newsletter

First Friday Social: Friday November 30th 6:00-8:00 p.m

December’s First Friday social will be held on Friday, November 30th at The Wolf and Hound.  Come join us for a drink and some food before we enter exam season!  If you have joined us in the past you know there will be good people and conversation.  If you’re new, why not come out and meet some new grad students from all areas of the university?  Yes, we know that this Friday is technically not the first Friday of December, but since many people are busy or away next month, we thought we would get a head start.  Look for the area with the rainbow flag, or call Alexis at 778-847-0773 if you have trouble finding us.

Call for Papers – Queer U conference

As part of Outweek (Feb 4-9), Pride UBC is organizing Queer U, an annual graduate-level academic conference on sexualities and genders. The conference centers on bringing the research and work of graduate students and established scholars from across the West Coast of North America and beyond to a broad audience in an attempt to foster understanding and discussion.  The deadline to submit an abstract has been extended to December 5th.  Visit blogs.ubc.ca/queeru for more information.

A Christmas Carol in Gay Apparel – a play by the Leaping Thespians

The Leaping Thespians presents their parody of A Christmas Carol, with a lesbian twist!  The ghost of Marley is a college girlfriend who visits Crooge many years later. Marley admits to her own past homophobia and urges Crooge to come out. Her warning is followed by visits from the Ghosts of Lesbians Past, Present and Future.  One of The Network’s members is performing in (and helped write) the production, so show your support!  leapingthespians.ca/ChristmasCarolInGayApparel.html

Location for November First Friday

See you at The Speakeasy downtown (on Davie between Bute and Jervis) for our next First Friday!

We will meet there on November 2 from 6-8pm.
