Queer U 2013 CFP

Queer U is an annual interdisciplinary student academic panel organized during Outweek, which is a week of queer events that Pride UBC puts together.

You can find the CFP for the next edition over at the Queer U website!

Hello, school year 2012-13

An another school year has officially started… welcome to everyone who’s starting at UBC, and welcome back to everyone else!

Don’t miss our first First Friday of the year next month; it’s a great way to meet new people and/or catch up on what everyone’s been doing this summer. See you at the Wolf and Hound at 6pm on Oct 5.

Also, we have a new brochure for you that you check out and/or circulate freely.

No First Friday in April – see you in May!

We have decided not to organize a First Friday in April since we didn’t have enough people from the organizing committee who could commit this month. So we will be celebrating the end of the school year at our next get-together in May, at The Wolf and Hound in Kitsilano.  See you there!

PS. If you would like to get involved in the organizing committee, email us at queergrads.ubc [at] gmail.com. We can always use some help. 🙂

Out in Academia

Pride UBC presents:

A panel on being queer and/or trans in the academy

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be an openly queer (LGBTQ) person working in the academy?
How queer-friendly are universities as a workspace?
How different is it to be out across departments and over time?
How do you negotiate heteronormativity in the classroom or research lab?

Whether you are planning on having an academic career or not, we invite you to come hear about the experiencesof openly “out” professors and post-docs from all over UBC campus (including: Sociology, Psychology, Law, Zoology, Asian Studies, and Computer Science). There will be plenty of time for discussion, so that you can have all your questions answered.
Join us on MARCH 23, 4:30-6 in BUCH B318.
Free refreshments and delicious snacks provided.

Outweek 2012

Outweek 2012 starts Monday at noon! There are lots of events happening over the next two weeks, so don’t forget to check out the full schedule of events.

And of course, we especially look forward to seeing you at our Games Night on February 9, the film screening with Ugandan LGBT activist Val Kalende on Feb 14, and at the Queer U academic conference on Feb 15!

February 1st Friday + Games Night

We have two events coming up!

The February First Friday is happening this Friday at the Speakeasy bar downtown (at Davie and Bute). See you there between 6 and 8!

And next week we will be getting together for a board games night at Ruth’s house. All are welcome! RSVP to rvsharpe.ubc@gmail.com for directions.

There is also a graduate conference (Queer U) being organized at UBC on February 15. For more information, visit their website or check out the poster below.

December 1st Friday

For the last First Friday of 2011, we will be heading to the Commercial Drive area! Join us at St Augustine’s at Commercial and 7th, at our usual time (6-8), on December 2. We will have a rainbow flag with us to help you find us, if this is your first time.

And in January, we’ll be back to the Kits area!

Queer Bowling!

Join us for bowling with other queer grad students, post docs, and professional students at Grandview Lanes Bowling Centre. This is a great chance for us to get to know each other in a less bar-like environment. Feel free to invite friends, or even put together your own group and bowl in the lane next to us. Pizza, burgers, and drinks are available at their restaurant if desired, or just focus on the athletic rigor of bowling.

Where: Grandview Lanes Bowling Centre. Commercial Dr. and East 6th Ave., a few blocks North of Commercial skytrain station.
When: Friday, November 18, 8:00 p.m. Be there a bit early to rent shoes.
Cost: ~$5 per game, plus $3 shoe rental (plus tax)
RSVP: Email us at queergrads.ubc@gmail.com so we know how many lanes to reserve, or call Alex at 604-354-0536.

Thank you

The Network is off a fantastic start! We had a wonderful crowd show up at The Wolf and Hound for our first First Friday of the 2011/2012 school year, so we wanted to thank all of you.

We will soon be announcing the time and date for our next admin meeting, so stay tuned, and we hope to see all of you (and more!) on the first Friday of November. 🙂

Admin meeting Sept 22

In preparation for our October First Friday, and to kick off the new year, we will be having our next admin meeting on Thursday Sept. 22, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. We will be meeting in I. K. Barber Library, Room 316.

Everyone is welcome to attend – whether you want to get involved,  give some feedback on the group, or just see how decisions get made by the steering committee. We would love to see you there!
