About

Hi, and thank you for your interest in my work. I am a Professor in the Department of Educational Studies in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. This campus is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people, which has been a place of learning for thousands of years. For my contact information, see my departmental faculty page.

I was born and raised in the Netherlands, but have lived in Canada since 2000. I am a graduate of Pearson College UWC and completed my PhD at Simon Fraser University (2005).

My main scholarly field is philosophy of education. On this site you will find information about my research and teaching, as well as tips for applicants to the EDST PhD program who would like me to serve as their supervisor.

I am President of the Philosophy of Education Society (2024-2025) and Past President of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society (2016-2019). Since 2008 I have been part of the international research group “Studies of Conflict, Culture and the Political in Education” (SCAPE).
