Home Recording

You may wish to record videos at home, or from a location other than Sauder, to incorporate into your course. This is a great idea to help keep students informed about weekly course updates, prep work, pre-recorded lessons, live lectures (i.e.ZOOM recordings), guest presentations, homework explanations, student feedback, office hours, etc.

Learning Services supports several options for recording videos at home.

Canvas

Great for: Weekly video announcements; student-created videos, student feedback videos.
Where to access: In the Canvas text editor toolbar.
It captures: Webcam and audio.
Uploading to Canvas: Automatic.
Editing: No capability.

My Media (Kaltura)

Great for: Student-created videos, videos with embedded quizzes.
Where to access: Found in My Media in Canvas.
It captures: Audio, video, screen.
Uploading to Canvas: Automatic.
Editing: Limited capability, however, closed captioning is available.

Camtasia

Great for: Pre-recorded lectures, screen recordings, editing, branding.
Where to access: Can be downloaded.
It captures: Audio, video, screen.
Uploading to Canvas: Can be manually uploaded to Kaltura or Panopto for inclusion in Canvas.
Editing: Extensive editing options available.

Zoom

Great for: Live lectures, presentations.
Where to access: Either via ubc.zoom.us, or via Panopto (Zoom can be connected to Panopto).
It captures: Audio, video, screen.
Uploading to Canvas: No, but links can be shared via Panopto or Zoom’s cloud feature.
Editing: Limited capability. However, when connected to Panopto, editing options increase.

Branding Your Videos

After recording your videos, you may choose to add on-screen Sauder branding in case your recording(s) end up on the internet. There are two ways to do this:

Use the automated branding service in Panopto
If you are an experienced video editor using either Camtasia or Premiere (Adobe) video editing suites, use a self-serve template.

Automated Branding Service

Here is an example output of our automated branding service. The branding intro, watermark, and outro in this video were added automatically with our new software integration. This example is embedded using Panopto video platform:

To use the automated branding tool, please follow these steps and prerequisites for your video:

Record your video and edit content as usual using a technology outlined above. Please note: ensure you have at least 3 seconds of silence at the beginning and end of your video for the transitions between the branding slides.
Upload your video to your personal folder in Panopto.
- If you have a Panopto account and record your live Zoom classes, the recordings will be pushed automatically to Panopto and placed in a folder named “Meeting Recordings” in your “My Folder”.
Visit our web request form to tell us which video you would like branded and the text you wish for the beginning titles.
Once processed, we will upload the branded version to your folder where you can share and embed your video in Canvas. Our branding turnaround time is roughly 24-hours.
