Assignment 5-Charlotte Chen

I asked my roommate to put randomly 6 things into bags. Here are the other 5 except for the one I chose.

Blind-folded drawing: I tried to draw the object from different sides as well as the uneven texture it has.

After the object (nail polish) was revealed, I realized the body of the bottle was transparent which was skipped when I temporarily lost my sight.

Assignment 05

In front of me, I had three mystery objects and a variety of media (acrylic paint, pens, pencil, conte). After blindly selecting an object, I selected media that I thought would best convey how it felt.

The first object is a rock with a rough, irregular shape and texture, which has been cut transversely to reveal holes on the inside of the rock. Conte seemed to offer a lot of flexibility in ways of conveying the object. After drawing the object blindly and while seeing it, annotations were added with observations to compare the two approaches.

The second object is a cold piece of La Vache Qui Ri (a triangular wedge-shaped piece of cream cheese wrapped in tinfoil packaging). It was finger-painted with acrylic paint. I wanted to be able to touch the paper directly with my hand rather than using a tool for mark-making. Finger-painting limited the kinds of lines I could make, but seemed to work for something that was cold and smooth.

A5 – Touch

In class I drew this sponge. It’s texture and squishiness were the most apparent feature. Drawing blindfolded I was focusing on the experience of my hand, but trying to translate this to a visual representation, while not being able to see the lines posed an intresting hand minds-eye coordination issue.

It came out well enough though.

For homework I posed this challenge to my roommates, to deliver me an object to draw – where I couldn’t know what it was. There was a lot of laughter as they scurried around the room scheming ways to make this as challenging as possible to me. I was sitting unsighted the whole time and that really built up the tension. The strangest object of all time was delivered into my hands, but as I investigated it it broke into pieces. Slowly I was able to figure out exactly what some of the objects were.

Even as I knew what the objects were drawing them on the page unsighted was still challenging. Ultimately though the lines were quite expressive and im very satisfied.

The drawings on the right end of the page were done after regaining sight.
