Hi, I’m Shakti!

I am currently completing my undergraduate degree in Geography, with an Environment and Sustainability concentration at the University of British Columbia. I care about climate action that recognizes the urgency of climate change, and the intersection of social justice, politics and appropriate technology. In my academic journey, I switched directions to Geography after three years of Electrical Engineering, which makes me especially passionate about the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and communication when it comes to tackling big challenges.

Throughout my time at UBC, I’ve been lucky to work with some amazing teams of students to advocate for climate and sustainability action on campus through my work with Common Energy UBC, the UBC Sustainability Collective, and by helping to launch the UBC Climate Hub.

Outside of school, I work as a Project Coordinator for Student Energy, a global charity working to empower the next generation of energy leaders. Our next exciting project is the SevenGen Indigenous Student Energy Summit, an Indigenous youth led conference about energy that’s the first of its kind.

Previously, I’ve worked as a Sustainability Researcher for the City of Surrey, and I’ve designed and taught a course on energy, climate science and sustainability for middle school students in my hometown in rural southern India. I also had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Students on Ice expedition to Antarctica (which is where I took that rad iceberg photo you see in the banner).

In my free time, I love to read, write (like for the Ubyssey) cook experimental vegan meals, and appreciate dogs.
