Moving Forward: A Strategy

Based on the land and water systems assessments, it is clear that opportunities for agriculture exist despite inefficiencies and vulnerabilities within the water system, but the question remains of how to address these opportunities and challenges in a way that will improve the overall functioning of the agricultural system.

Holistic management frameworks are based upon the idea that system is made up of integrated parts, and therefore provide a promising option for managing water resources that exist in complex, integrated systems. In this way, they can be used by farmers or resource managers to capitalize on these opportunities and address vulnerabilities and inefficiencies, and thus guide future agricultural strategy towards increased resource use efficiency and equitability among all users. These management systems will also be adaptable for changing conditions and long-term time scales, thus improving the resilience of the system in the face of climate change.
