Belo Sun Mining Corp vs. Brazilian Authorities

Belo Sun Mining Corporation planned on starting up a gold mine on the Xingu River in Brazil; however, these plans are being put on hold because Brazil’s federal authorities claim that the company has been asked twice to research the negative repercussions that the mine could have on the surrounding community and environment, receiving no adequate response from Belo Sun. The authorities are concerned that the mine will be along side a nearby controversial damming project, and that the combined environmental consequences will harm the countries land and people. Failing to follow through with these demands, the company is now facing a troublesome future, and potentially no permit to mine on the Xingu River. Belo Sun Mining Corp’s “shortsightedness” and disregard for the environment and well-being of locals has put a damper on its initiative. If the company would have planned ahead and followed through with the requests of the Brazilian authorities, it could have avoided this disagreement and moved along with its initial plan. Since the primary concern of any company is to make and increase profit, it is in that company’s own best interest to consider the external consequences of its decisions. In the long run, such consequences could not only harm others, but the company itself.
