In the beginning

This blog was inspired by an assignment for Dr. Siân Echard’s  ENGL 419A (History of the Book) at The University of British Columbia. While searching for an interesting topic for my final assignment, I began browsing through the Rare Books and Special Collections library archives database, and eventually stumbled upon the featured excerpt on the Doukhobors in Canada. Naturally, I had many questions about the excerpt.  Why was it printed? Who was the intended audience? Etc… My prior research on the Sons of Freedom Doukhobors focused on how the media in the 1950’s and 1960’s tended to portray this small sect and ethnic minority as a dangerous and highly organized crime syndicate. This is a gross misrepresentation of the truth. Although it is beyond the scope of this assignment to give a full understanding of the history, religion and culture of the Doukhobors, it is my hope that this blog will encourage readers to learn about the Doukhobor faith.
