History

In the past, it has been difficult to define what “good citizenship” is.  Democracy along with democratic citizenship has been defined as a form of government in the past (Szymanski Sunal et al., 2011). However, the current definition of democratic citizenship has changed to practice it within our lives. Questions about how to practice citizenship along with social justice have been brought up in our current era. There have been studies on how to encourage children to become active citizens who practice global citizenship in addition to becoming aware of the global issues (Lim, 2008 – include additional studies for this). The definition of being a good citizen changes throughout time. As a result, by understanding what the current definition of being a good citizen is in the global aspect, the practice of incorporating the themes of being a global citizen can be implemented within the classroom.

Global citizenship is connected to humanitarianism and international development (Barker et al., 2013). Global citizenship is also equivalent to helping others in the world. Open Democracy states that a global citizen is someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices.
