Social Statistics Workshop #2

Next Wednesday we are holding the second statistics workshop in preparation for the SOCI 328 final exam. This is a free workshop open to undergraduate students of any year and in any faculty, although workshop examples will be based on sociological research. Students do not have to be enrolled in SOCI328 to attend, although some prior statistical knowledge is needed to follow along with the concepts covered.

Topic: Inferential statistics, with applications to Stata statistical program.

Intro to SPSS Workshop

Learn the basics of exploring your data! This undergraduate-led workshop is designed to provide students with a practical guide for navigating SPSS, the popular statistics computer program used in the social sciences.

When – Wednesday, Feb. 3rd from 1-2PM
Where – Buchanan B125 (located in the computer labs of Buchanan A) 

Details:

  • Free workshop open to undergraduate students of any year and in any faculty (although workshop examples will be based on sociological research).
  • No prior social statistics knowledge needed—the focus is on practical use of the software and only the basic idea behind statistical techniques will be covered. 
  • This workshop is based on learning to access and use secondary public use social science data. However, students may also apply workshop exercises to their own data instead.
  • A take-home SPSS handout will be provided—this covers all workshop material and more. Please bring a pen!

What you’ll learn in SPSS 23

  • Using statistical tools – frequency distributions (tables & charts), univariate analysis, measures of central tendency & dispersion, bivariate analysis, & more! 
  • Data management skills – Locating and accessing public use datasets, recoding variables, dealing with missing variables.
