Co-President: Lulu Wang

Lulu Wang (she/her) is a fifth-year student studying Sociology and Economics. Her main academic interest in Sociology is in Economic Sociology, which looks into the long-lasting societal impacts caused by economic phenomena relating to changes in workplace dynamics, globalization, capitalism, or simply the state of economies. Lulu has had a lot of amazing Sociology professors during her time at UBC, but Dr. Catherine Corrigall-Brown (who previously taught SOCI 102) is one who greatly inspires her! As the 2023-2024 Co-President, she and Chloe are committed to providing various academic and social opportunities to everyone in Sociology, while fostering a sense of community where all are welcomed! When she’s not committing Sociology, you can usually find her trying to learn new languages (with German being her newest addition), exploring museums and galleries, or simply catching up with her friends!

Co-President: Chloe Pan

Chloe (she/her) is a fifth-year Sociology major, minoring in Economics. Her academic interests focus on the impact that the economic institutions have on society which causes it to adapt and the influence that economics and sociology have on culture and institutions. Throughout her educational career, she has had the opportunity to interact with many inspirational professors, one, in particular, was Professor Craig Meadows who made Soci 371 (Classical Theories) quite enjoyable. As the 2023-24 Co-President alongside Lulu, she looks forward to continuing to provide opportunities to foster community, empowering individuals and building engagement. When she’s not committing to Sociology, you can usually find her cafe hopping or creating and listening to her Spotify playlists.

VP Academic: Julia Dhillon

Julia (they/she) is a fourth-year student double-majoring in honours sociology and political science. Their academic interests pertain to analyzing how imperialist white supremacist capitalist cisheteropatriarchy manifests within political contexts. Congruently, they love reading sociopolitical theory—with some of their favourite theorists being Chandra Mohanty, Sylvia Federici, and bell hooks. Julia’s love for sociology was ignited in their first year by Neil Armitage’s SOCI 100 class—and this interest was reinforced by all of the subsequent sociology courses they took. As VP Academic, Julia hopes to support students in their academic endeavours and help students develop a sociological imagination that is backed by academic literature. When Julia is not committing to Sociology, you can usually find them playing their electric guitar, planning out their next tattoo, or hyperfixating on something.

As VP External for this year, Gabbi hopes to leverage her position in order to expand the SSA’s reach with its alumni and external organizations in order to offer enhanced networking and professional development opportunities for students on campus! When she is not committing to sociology, she enjoys joining various social events on campus, getting her Tim Horton’s fix, or watching period dramas on Netflix!
