Newport Castle

This is a Marcher Lord castle…

…onto which the Victorians grafted a mansion (after demolishing an inconvenient tower).

The castle isn’t open to the public, but today there was some kind of garden show just wrapping up when we arrived and nobody noticed a couple of American tourists wandering onto the grounds.

There’s a nice gargoyle on the east side, but I couldn’t get a photo with half-decent lighting because the sun was in the process of going down on the west side.

What I wouldn’t give to live in a house literally sandwiched between a 14th-century tower and a 13th-century curtain wall.

Also, what I wouldn’t give to get my hands on (read: around the neck of) the Victorian who thought it was a good idea to demolish the other tower.
