Recognizing Propaganda/Advertising Techniques

Key activities is one part of the business model canvas. As the completing of the business model canvas, I realize that advertising is the indispensable substance of the key activities. When I search online, there are some interesting propaganda/advertising techniques that I want to share.

Propaganda Techniques: name calling, glittering generalities, transfer, false analogy, testimonial, plain folks, card stacking, bandwagon, either/or fallacy, faulty cause and effect…

In order to persuade audiences to believe in what they say, propaganda makers or advertisement masterminds use propaganda techniques to manipulate audiences. These techniques are used not only in commerce advertisements but also in social and political advertisements.

Political Ad

Mittiny On the Bounty

1. Card-stacking is evident in this cartoon. Romney is calling for “more sloops and schooners”, on the contrary, Obama has already had a aircraft carrier. 2. The agenda here is to attack Romney, saying that Romney is stuck in the past, is delusional, while Obama is actually winning the country.

Social Issue Ad

Pajama Boy

1. Bandwagon is made evident here by the image of ObamaCare’s targeted group-young adults. Pajama Boy is wearing pajamas, drinking hot chocolate and talk about getting health insurance. He is in his twenties, and he is probably dependent on his parents. 2. The agenda here is to convince young adults around twenties that all “your friends” are thinking about getting health insurance; you should also get insurance.

Commercial Ad

Create a Celebrity

1. This ad is using the Bad logic. It shows a picture that the most interesting man in the world, who also looks wealthy, is drinking the beer and having two pretty girls. 2. Being the most interesting man, being wealthy and having pretty girlfriends are most guys dreams. The agenda here is to confuse audiences that drinking the beer can help their dream come true.
