Facilitative Teaching

Facilitative teaching seeks to help [learners] “construct” meaning and come to an understanding of important ideas and processes. Teachers in this role guide [learner] inquiries into complex problems, texts, cases, projects, or situations. Their principal methods are questioning, probing, and process-related commentary, with little or no direct instruction.

As facilitative teachers, members of the FPD team regularly organize and facilitate professional development events for the teaching and learning community, both within and outside of UBC. We offer workshops on such topics as peer review of teaching, presentation skills, providing constructive feedback in difficult situations, and facilitation and process design skills, among others. As facilitators, we support diverse communities of practice including course design, portfolios, and teaching and learning for the heart and mind.
