I really appreciated this article. I was nice not to just have some science background but the controversy around its field research, patents and governing aspects of the program. The first thing I thought of is how easy it is to eat a product in excess when you really like it and you know that there are nutrition benefits; such as nutella or fibre one granola bars (a weakness of mine, and no too much fibre does not do the body good!). It’s difficult to control eating habits and portion control in western society. How can one attempt to control the eating habits of the hungry?

I was not surprised to read that mothers were letting their children eat it all early on. The best solution to all hidden hunger is a more diverse diet. I definitely see the incredible benefits of plumpy’nut, but I think if the mothers were also supplied with some more diverse foods with the plumpy’nut distribution; such as canned (or jarred) varieties of fruits and veggies and fortified rice (or the culturally appropriate option) wouldn’t they receive a more balanced nutritional approach? I am aware of distribution issues. But shouldn’t improved distribution be the goal to protect against hunger then money put towards patents?

    Just some thoughts.
