You may find that many patrons are getting white screens when they try to log on to the public computers. The white screen is because their library accounts have not been activated yet. They should go to the Circulation Desk to get this taken care of. To get rid of the white screen, hit “ + left arrow” to go back to the login page, then cancel to go back to the CWL / library barcode login page. The arrow keys are between the main keyboard and the numbers.

From UBC IT:

“A trial ‘ubcvisitor’ wireless network is operating for the duration of the Winter Games.  This allows campus Visitors to connect to the Internet for light web browsing.  Service restrictions are in place such as limited bandwidth and limited accessible network ports.”

For more info, see: http://it.ubc.ca/internet/wireless/Visitor_Wireless_Network.html

All problems or questions should be routed through the UBC IT Help Desk (not Library Systems and IT).

Rumour has it that there are two scanners in IKBLC in the Chapman Learning Commons on the Mac multimedia machines. And no charge! And bookable. Only 2 of the 4 machines have scanners, not sure which ones, but a call to CLC would give the answer.

The copy card machine is out of order. There is a problem with the power supply so it will be out of commission for a few days. Please direct patrons to the card machine on floor 3 (beside the south elevator).

A student tried to print a job from K217 this afternoon but it wouldn’t show up on the print queue. Systems help desk suggested typing in the whole id for the computer, KOELAB-121, but it still didn’t show up. They are looking into the problem now and will get back to us.
UPDATE: the next student did key in the entire station ID and number and the print job worked fine, so it looks like you can’t just put in the number, but need KOELAB – at least for 217. Haven’t had comments from people working on computers labelled HUMANITIES so maybe they can just put in the number?

The new printers have been set up (by Tracy from IT). I have left sample printouts at the ref. desk. New prices are $0.07 for black and white and $0.40 for colour. Almost all of the computers on level two have been restarted and the new grizzly (b&w) printer shows up as the default. Users must manually select the colour printer if that’s what they want so hopefully there won’t be too many expensive mistakes. Several computers that were in use at the time that the IT staff were here have not been re-started so they will not reflect the new printers – however users can still print from them (I checked one that was not re-booted and can’t tell the difference…). All the computers will be restarted over night and should all be set up for the new printers by tomorrow. If, after that, any of the computers do not appear to be displaying the correct printer, try restarting the computer. If that doesn’t work call IT.
Xerox Rep (Anthony Wong) has also done some installation work on the map printer so that should be all ready to go too.

I have had several people in who were having trouble accessing MyiLibrary books from their laptops – it kept taking them to an authorization page. Tech Services have said they are working to resolve the problem (something to do with the IP address), but for now there are two options.
1) MyiLibrary is still working from desktop library or UBC computers.
2) If using a wireless connection the best thing to do is:
a) make sure the student has set up VPN on their computer and go through that before trying
to connect to MyiLibrary or
b) use the RSVPN *but* you will then have to go through the UBC Library’s information page [
http://toby.library.ubc.ca/resources/infopage.cfm?id=1399 ] and search for the title in
MyiLibrary as RSVPN is not connecting through the catalogue right now.
Hope that helps – Me-Linh

I recently had a question from a student who had been told that she MUST use a mac to do her art assignment. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any for her to use. The “welcome to your library” guide suggests that there are macs at Barber, so she went over there. I popped in to the Learning Commons today and was told that they will have macs installed sometime in October (they showed me the spot where they are going to be- there’s not room for many!). Anyone know of any secret campus macs in the meantime? Or of a way I can find out?

There is a problem with the DocDel system due to a recent upgrade. Users new to the system (i.e. those who have not placed a previous request ) are encountering an error when they try to order a book from UBCO. The message says:

“Add request failed: There was an Internal Error. Please contact the service provider. Please inform Systems Division. Back to catalogue”

Systems and ILL are working on this. In the meantime, if you get a patron at the desk who needs to DocDel an item, you can phone Liz in ILL at 2-6596 and she can manually add the patron’s record to the database so that they can place the DocDel request.
Thanks to Paul for troubleshooting this.

The Arts Lab is “closed for maintenance” this weekend.
A couple of students who’d intended to work on Dreamweaver in there today were mightily disappointed. We called over to the Chapman Learning Commons on the off chance that Dreamweaver has been installed on computers over there, but no luck.
