A Little About Me…

Hello! My name is Alicia. I am a mom to a (sometimes) wonderful teenage boy and a (sometimes) wonderful Great Dane named Alonso. I am also a wife to a caring and supportive husband. I am currently employed as an Administrative Assistant for the KGH Microbiology Department and am attending school part-time to obtain my Science Degree.

I enrolled at UBC-O in the Fall of 2014 where I began in a General Science Program. Returning to school after 13 years was terrifying, frustrating, difficult and ultimately, very rewarding! I spent many nights crying over chemistry and pondering painfully over physics but I knew that I had taken the right step in finally following my goals.

I choose to specialize in Biochemistry. I felt at the time that it would provide the best ‘base-knowledge’ for my further aspirations of applying to Medical School. But then… Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and whatever other kinds of chemistry there are… and I knew that I never wanted to take another chemistry class, ever. I switched my specialization to something that I had taken more of an interest in, Microbiology.

I am currently a Microbiology major in my 3rd/4th year. I had done my first 2 years as a full-time student, but am currently working full-time and attending school part-time. I will be officially finished 90 credits of my degree this semester so I am getting closer! As mentioned above, I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine and am currently studying to write the MCAT later this year.

If accepted to Medical School, my dream is to be a General Practitioner and work at a clinic in a small community. I am finding (in my old age) the call of a smaller town is rather appealing. I would like to care for and be present for a community, and play a small part in restoring people’s faith in the healthcare system.
