Welcome to English 301 – Technical Writing!
Technical writing is offered via distance education to a wide variety of students and incorporates individual learning with a collaborative approach. This course utilizes the 14th edition of “Technical Communication” by Lannon and Gurak which outlines steps to formulate appropriate and professional written work.
In every field, it will be required of all to engage in communication with others, whether it be with a peer, a manager, or an employee. It is imperative that, as a professional, one learns how to communicate both efficiently and professionally. This course teaches base skills on how to appropriately convey ideas in the written format.
One of the first tasks in this course was to formulate a page and introduce ourselves. As well as articulating ideas, it is helpful to learn how to represent yourself in a professional setting. Making a good first impression, as with an introduction or a resume, can be a crucial first step in someone’s career. This course allows students to explore and practice introducing themselves via an electronic platform.
Another helpful skill that this course offers is learning how to work collaboratively with a group of peers. I’m sure many students have had to participate in team projects at sometime during their education, but this course offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with others solely electronically. In today’s electronic driven world team members do not need to be in the same physical location anymore and much business is conducted via email or online teleconferences. It is an important skill to be able to work as a team without face-to-face interaction.
My expectations of this course are simply to be able to work on and explore ways of working together with people and expressing ideas professionally and concisely via an online environment.
