Beaty Biodiversity Museum

2212 Main Mall, UBC Vancouver Campus

The museum’s missions states that:

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum inspires an understanding of biodiversity, its origins, and importance to humans through collections-based research, education, exhibitions, and community engagement. As Vancouver’s natural history museum, we work to promote a greater sense of collective responsibility for the biodiversity of British Columbia, Canada, and the world.

While the space might have educational and research programs, the spectacle of the bodies and remains of millions of specimens on display suggest a paradoxical approach to preservation.

In addition, the musuem is named after Ross Beaty, often described in the media as having taken a “green turn” after leaving the mining industry to pursue the potential to develop non-fossil fuel energy sources, and support other environmental organizations. The museum is named for him because of an $8 million donation to develop the institution and showcase and collect specimens that exemplify biodiversity.
