Seminar abstract

Underrepresented minority consumers experience unique journeys in the financial services context. In this research, Dr. Scott examines approaches companies can take to heighten inclusion and justice for minority consumers. Through the lens of the consumers’ experiences, this research identifies firms’ shortcomings and opportunities to strengthen relationships with consumers who have been left out of the financial services market in the past. First, by uncovering the specific needs of consumers in financial services deserts, she discusses how firms can engage this consumer segment in ways that are beneficial for both consumers and the firm.  Next, she discusses the experiences of minority small business owners applying for loans, and uncovers when and why these customers experience barriers when seeking financial services. She underscores how promoting justice, equity, and financial inclusion can be beneficial for consumers, communities, businesses, and society. She also discusses directions for future research, and implications for consumers, businesses, and policy makers.
