A practical guide for charity fundraising

Charities put considerable effort into fundraising campaigns, but assessing their impact on donations can be challenging, especially given the constraints of time, resources, and access to data expertise. Many rely on click-through rates, email opens, and social media engagement—which measure attention, but not action. The real challenge is understanding what works: which messages, strategies, and behavioural principles truly influence donation behaviour.

At BIT, we use rigorous evaluation methods to help organisations measure what works to drive impact. In partnership with the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) in Singapore, we developed the Effective Fundraising Communications Playbook. Based on multiple randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with nine charities, this free resource provides evidence-based strategies that charities everywhere can apply to boost donations and improve engagement.
