Affiliated with the Alma Mater Society (AMS) of the University of British Columbia (UBC), Bangladesh Students’ Association (BSA) runs within the scope of the Graduate Student Society (GSS) at UBC. Run by the student volunteers, BSA was conceptualized to portray, nurture, and propagate the cultural essence and heritage of Bangladesh. BSA conventionally organizes a number of cultural events each year including celebration of Pahela Baishakh (Bengali New Year), celebration of International Mother Language Day (February 21), Day of Independence (March 26), and Victory Day (December 16) to uphold the secular spirit of Bangladesh’s War of Independence. By extending assistance in helping the students get settled at UBC, BSA also has become the focal point for the incoming students principally originating from Bangladesh. The Fresher’s Reception, customarily organized around the beginning of Winter Session, provides the incoming students with the opportunity to mingle, and thus extend their network with, the existing students and other Bangladeshi Expatriates in Canada. The Fresher’s Reception is accompanied by Eid-Puja Reunion representing the cultural diversity and ethnic harmony prevailing in Bangladesh.
