Dear all graduate students, faculty and staff members of CHBE,
you are invited to the annual CHBE Christmas Lunch Party!
This year we are doing the event in the Saint John College Dining Hall!
The event details are:
Date and Time: December 9, 2015 at 12:30PM – 3:00PM
Location: Saint John College, van der Linden Dining Hall, 2111 Lower Mall

Ticket price: $5

The event will start with all the participants dining together. Then we will have a quick networking session where grad students and faculty and will be asked to will be asked to rotate tables every 15 minutes. For faculty and staff, there is no cost to attend and all registered participants will receive the Classic Canadian Turkey meal.
Please state if you like a vegeterian meal.
It is a great chance for graduate students to get to know more about the CHBE faculty and staff members.

As the school term approaches its end, we invite you to come to GSC 2015’s election for a new president on April 27th at 12:30 pm. During the election, a BBQ and a drink will be provided to you.
The new president will have the entire May to form his/her executive team.
If you want to nominate yourself for the position, please notify me via email (ywang@chbe.ubc.ca) before April 20th. The candidates are required to participate in the organization of the BBQ and talk to other graduate students during the BBQ till the election is done.

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers is an organization made up of Chemical Engineering students, for Chemical Engineering students. On April 17th-19th, 2015, CHBE will be hosting AIChE’s Pacific North-west regional conference. Undergraduate student leaders from across the Pacific Northwestern region of the US and Canada will gather to Connect the Dots of their past and present learning experiences in efforts to build sustainable, bright futures.
Throughout the conference, we will be hosting four exciting competitions: 1. Chem-E-Car 2. Paper presentation 3. Poster Presentation 4. Chem-E-Jeopardy We are looking for graduate students who would be interested in judging our competitions and being involved with our conference on either/both April 18th and April 19th, 2015.

Winners of APSC Grad Research Showcase
On March 3rd, 2015, as a recognition to the winners, top department presenters for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) gathered at Kaiser
2020/2030 for the faculty of ASPC Grad Research Showcase – Peek into the World of Grad Research. The event showcased the winners’ presentations.
All Engineering graduate students, faculty and staff were invited to encourage and celebrate the students as they prepare for the next stage in the competition – the UBC semi-final on March 10th.
To simulate the actual 3MT competition, three commmunication experts:
Lou Corpuz-bosshart , Media Relations Specialist (UBC Public Affairs), Margaret Doyle, Digital Storyteller (UBC Brand/Marketing), Julie Ovenell, Director, Communications & Marketing (UBC VPRI) were invited to judge and to provide comments.
Jeanette Leeuwner from Chemical & Biological Engineering won the first prize with her presentation, entitled “Engineering fuel cells for the future”. The runners up are Tim Rogers and Samantha Grist from Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as Amir Shoolestani from Civil Engineering.
The next step is the UBC wide semi-finals on Mar 10!

3MT is an UBC competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentation and communication skills by presenting in just three minutes the breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience.

Greetings from the CHBE Graduate Students Club,
We are pleased to announce that the Professional Development Seminar Series is back! Our first speaker of the year will be Dr. Vikram Yadav. He joined the department as an assistant professor last summer and will be talking about his journey in the academia.
The emphasis of the seminar will be on answering graduate students’ questions. So don’t be shy to bring your burning questions to the session!

In this monthly seminar series, successful professionals such as faculty members and/or alumni of CHBE department share the stories of their career paths including making important career decisions. These highly interactive seminars provide an excellent opportunity to hear and learn from instructing and exciting experiences of the speakers. We believe these seminars are beneficial for graduate students in developing the skills necessary for professional work environment in academia/industry.
We are having a special Coffee Social on next Friday January 30, 2015.
UBC Graduate Student Society (GSS) executives will be bringing snack and CHBE GSC committee members will be there to make coffee!
