Welcome to John’s ENGL 301 Blog!
English 301 is a course for developing written communication skills. In a professional work setting, there are no shortage of opportunities to collaborate with others, communicate with clients, and circulate reports throughout the team. Clarity and consistency of written communications is an essential component of an efficient and effective work environment. This becomes even more important in engineering roles where the responsibility falls upon the specialist to describe technical concerns in a digestible, precise, and valuable manner. It is easy for most people to overestimate their written communication skills; however, I have seen situations where two stakeholders develop completely different opinions after being given the same proposal. Good communication is key in the technical industry, and a valuable skill to improve as a developing professional.
The effort invested in a program will determine how much value we will eventually reap from the content. I hope that by investing my own time into English 301, I can further refine my skills and become a more effective collaborator. I also expect myself to learn from good examples and to challenge my perception of a well-written report, briefing, or proposal. With practice, I would like to see myself develop better quality communications with limited time. I am eager to see what English 301 has to offer me, and I hope to have a lot of fun along the way!
