Welcome to COMM 296: Introduction to Marketing!
My name is Shalina Bhagat and I will be the TA for section 101 this semester. Let me start off by telling you a bit about myself. I’m a fourth year Marketing-Co-op student here at Sauder. This is, technically, my fifth year as a spent the last year on a Co-op term at CTV British Columbia, as a member of their Marketing and Promotions Department. It was one of the best work experiences I have had so far, and I hope to use what I learned on the job to give some additional insight into the world of Marketing and topics we cover in class.
In my free time, I enjoy hiking, shopping and spending time with family and friends. I am very passionate about Marketing –I’ve had experiences in market research as a member of the Commerce Scholars Program, advertising for events including the Beyond Pink Conference for the Young Women in Business Society, and media and public relations writing, through CTV. I am always free for a chat regarding the course, or my experiences at Sauder and in the field of Marketing. I am excited to learn along with you all this semester and look forward to *hopefully* getting you interested in pursuing a career in the field of Marketing!
My goal for this blog, amongst its main purpose of passing along class announcements and updates, is to have a place where everyone can share their thoughts on anything marketing related.
Another thing I hope to do with every post is to provide an ad or video clip that I like. If I can I will try and relate the ad/video clip back to what we are covering in class to help add depth to your learning. Since we haven’t started our classes yet this post will contain an ad and TED video that I like.
Having worked closely with the Marketing and Graphics departments at CTV during the Olympics, I got to preview a lot of the ads made by other television stations. This is one of my favourites:
From time to time I will post a TED Talk video. If you have not visited the site TED.com, I highly encourage you to do so; this site is filled with inspiring speakers from all around the world presenting on a wide range of topics. A friend of mine send me the one I about to share. I am crazy about this idea and hope that this shows you what a great site TED.com can be to finding a little inspiriation and learning some great lessons:

Video was great. I love seeing a different countries perspective when it comes to advertisments and the winter games in general. I could tell it wasn’t Canadian when there was no hockey featured!
