English 301, Technical Writing, is a course designed to educate on professional writing. Not professional writing in the sense of becoming the next great author, rather it is writing (and communicating) in the professional world. The class includes tips and techniques for composing documents and proposals, as well as fully implementing these in practice through the students own unique professional drafts, and applications. In addition to learning these practical writing skills for the professional world; other skills such as communication, peer-reviews/assessments, and building/maintaining a professional site will also be developed along the way.

What is exciting about the class is how it will facilitate the growth of all the skills mentioned above, and more. Unlike most other classes, there is no exam component to it. Instead, the students will be evaluated on aspects such as “emails” sent, formal reports, and their web-folio. The importance of such evaluations is due to its natural practicality. Not only are the students learning the techniques, but they are also learning the proper ways to implement them with professional critical feedback.

What I expect from this class is the development and refinement of useful business skills. I am excited specifically for the opportunity to produce various business type compositions, and receive feedback from both my peers as well as the professor. In addition, I expect that there will be plenty of lessons that I learn along the way, in which I am correcting bad habits that have developed through the course of my life. Finally, I expect that this class could potentially be one of the most useful courses I ever take from UBC as far as applicability is concerned. I can imagine that countless courses educate on the practicals of every profession out there. What I can’t imagine is that there are many classes designed to educate specifically on the professionalism required for interpersonal communications.
