Newbie in the House

Al Carmichael, joining this class from Victoria, BC. This is my first of two courses in the MET, and I’m excited about returning to the other side of the education equation–I’ve been teaching Physics, Chemistry and junior science for 25 years at the same school. I have experience ( recall first using that new, emerging technology called “E-Mail” in 1991) with the user side of Ed Tech, and I’m now very keen to delve into the development side.

    Hi Allen,
Also living in Victoria. Working in the Sooke School District. Hey, you might tout yourself as a newbie, but you figured out how to add a profile pic; whereas, I haven’t. Keeps guiding me to Gravatar plugin, but won’t sync from there. Any suggestions?
Thanks, and looking forward to our venture forward.
    Neal

Once you load a profile in Gravatar, and add the email you use for this site, in your profile page on Gravatar, under your name there is a button for”Verified Services”. I put in this wordpress site: http://virtual.educ.ubc.ca/wp

Then log out of the word press site and log in again…that seemed to work.

Having a chuckle at your 1991 email edtech experience. I have grim memories of the experience of signing up for my email address at UVic in 1992.

    Welcome to MET, Al.

Yes, remember reading your email word by word as it loaded onto your screen over your 1400 baud modem? Using PINE?

Then the World Wide Web was invented by physics geeks at CERN, and then there was light.

      And spam. Darn.

    Hey Allan!

I am in the same boat as you as this is my first course in this program. 25 years of teaching experience!!! That is amazing, I cant wait to hear what you have learned from being in the classroom that long. Are you still teaching full time?

    Hi Allan,

Welcome to MET! When you talked about email back in 1991, it reminded me of Yahoo GeoCities, the web hosting services. It took forever to load one page while now we are talking about 5G already. It is fascinating how technology has evolved. Looking forward to learning with you!

    Hi, Allan,

This is my very first MET course so I’m comforted to know I’m not the only newbie here!

    Hi Al,
I appreciate how you’ve dedicated yourself to teaching. There is a couple who has taught at the same school together for 20 years in Squamish. They are so young at heart it is and have really had a fulfilling career. It is so lucky as a younger teacher to have them at my school. I’m sure so many colleagues feel the same way about having you at the school! It is great that you are shifting gears and attending MET.
