Zwift: A Virtual Training Community for Cyclists

To follow up on my post from last week about Strava and the new trend of digital fitness tracking, I would like to introduce Zwift: A virtual training program for running and cycling. Zwift allows users track their progress indoors while watching an avatar run/cycle on a screen that follows their movement. At the same time, users can see the avatars of other users that are following the same map.

Zwift allows users to meet up online and ride/run together. They also host races and where thousands come out to participate. The gamification element of this app is important as well: Users unlock elements such as new cycling gear for their avatar and new maps and locations to ride in virtually. The app is primarily a mobile app available on tablets and phones. There is also a desktop version available.

From a cultural perspective, Zwift, along with many of the other mobile training apps, create a sense of community among users. The ability to meet up with other users from around the world allows people to connect with friends and family members who are far apart while participating in a shared passion. It also allows for users to engage in the social element of physical activities which are not available while exercising at home. During COVID and social distance measures, Zwift has become a fantastic tool to allow people to exercise with groups while still following safe practices.
