A1: Interactive Story Writing

My A1 Project is on interactive story writing and seeing whether it can replace the traditional writing method. I have used both programs (Inklewriter and Twinery) with my grade 6/7 classes this year. I created a website through Adobe Spark that introduces what interactive stories are and its value and significance to education. I then provide my review of this method of writing and where it stands in teaching writing in education.

Excellent analysis, Juliano! Your presentation is nicely structured and laid out and your analysis is excellent. Easy to read, clear and very good information presented in an elegant manner.

    Hello Juliano,

Nice analysis. I have no tried using interactive story writing with my students but I might consider it for my advanced students. I think having an alternate story might even spark their creativity.
I have introduced to twine a year ago. Actually, it was for one of the ETEC classes. It was challenging because I had to think of additional possible stories that might take readers to an alternative end.

    Juliano,

Thanks for doing your review on this topic. I have a unit in my teaching where I have students create “choose your own adventure” stories. As of now I still have them create them using paper and guiding the reader through their final book. It has been awhile since I have looked into a web app to have students create their stories. Starting next school year, I will definitely move students to one of the online platforms you suggested. Thank you!

Thanks for your post Adriana! The web program definitely simplified the guiding the reader process for the students where they didn’t need to figure out how to get all of their pages coordinated, the program takes care of most of that. I would say that Inklewriter is a bit more user friendly as it does not require coding (you click insert picture to insert a picture instead of needing to use HTML coding in Twinery) so that may be a good program to start with!

    Hi Juliano,

I enjoyed your analysis. I used Twine with my grade 8 students and it was great success. As you mentioned, it did take a significant amount of time to complete the process but interactive story writing helped to engage students by gamifying the writing process. It also personalizes learning and gives room for creativity. Thank you for sharing! I’ve bookmarked your site for future reference 🙂

Thanks Ceci! Although interactive story writing takes more time, it got some of my usual “non-writers” to write significantly more than they normally would because they enjoyed this format much more. It also allows for more interaction with their peers since they are motivated to share their stories with their peers and have them play through it to see what ending they get! I’m glad you enjoyed the site!
