Astronomy has a variety of unique and somewhat contradictory aspects: awe inspiring visuals of real objects that are so different from anything we encounter on Earth that they appear abstract; subjects that are fascinating yet absurdly out of reach; a hobby that can be both aesthetically and emotionally impactful but also incredibly technical.
Modern technology has created tools that have profound impacts on amateur astronomy. These impacts can reduce barriers to entry, but also expand what is possible by serious amateurs.
As a science teacher, astronomy has always appealed to me not only as a personal interest but as a way to inspire students to the complexity and beauty of the subject. This OER tries to investigate how mobile technology has impacted this opportunity.
