Sandra’s Introduction

Antique Typewriter in the Spring

Hello all!

I love the written word. Typography, design, eloquent and specific use of language, print technologies, the evolution of photography, and the rapid evolution of text technologies interspersed with educational philosophy all serve to delight and inspire me. I have really been looking forward to this course in the MET program, as it will be my 6th, which I am taking along with my 7th this summer, ETEC 531, Curriculum Issues in Cultural and New Media Studies.

I am an elementary teacher, but this is my second career! My background includes working in corporate communications and media relations for many years where I had wonderful opportunities to write, design, photograph, publish and edit as well as provide media consulting services to many clients in the education, forestry and business sectors. My communications background has served me well transitioning into teaching. If you work in communications, much like teaching you need to be a “jack of all trades.”

This image to me, conveys the essence of respect for the history of writing and text along with the beauty of some of the tools that have been utilized over time. Vintage type, type trays, typewriters, books and fountain pens all hold a special place in my heart as much as I am hooked into my tech tools! Although I took this photo on a Nikon digital camera, I enhanced it in my iPhone. Technology is amazing.

I look forward to creating and learning along side each of you within this course.

  1. Hi Sandra,

Great to “see” you as well. I come from a long line of photographers and put myself through university by shooting weddings. So I, too, love the evolution of photography and am constantly amazed at how we can manipulate photographs with technology. I haven’t played much with my iPhone photo editing tools but still use Photoshop to enhance images.

Looking forward to working with you.

  2. What a beautiful image! I love the juxtaposition of the subject matter and the technological enhancements.

  3. That is my original old typewriter!!! EGAD! Now I feel OLD!!! lol However, the old machine certainly was elegant and an exciting tool for playing with text at a young age. The image is absolutely artistically beautiful!

    Enjoy!

  4. I agree, this is a beautiful photo! I’ll be curious to know how you have transferred your communications background into the classroom, i.e., how it informs your practice. I view my students as my audience, one that I need to reach by communicating to them on their terms. Then, of course, there are so many audiences within an institution. I agree that your background is probably brilliant to handle the complexities and politics of teaching. Julia
