Yik Wah’s Introduction

As I pondered this introductory activity, I wanted to find an image that encapsulated the relationship I feel as a teacher with the materials, techniques and genres of writing I see in my classroom. The image above depicts an assignment I gave to my class for a poetry reading response, however the image was captured using an app called “Over” which essentially allows for text to be transposed over images (my students commonly use this app to create memes). Through this image I wanted to represent the tension of the “old school” and “new school” forms of text I see everyday in my classroom.

My name is Yik Wah Penner, and I teach 8th grade at a middle school in Richmond, B.C. This is my 6th course in the MET program, and so far I have enjoyed my journey thus far. I’m looking forward to meeting and working alongside you all this term.
