Ally’s Introduction

Hi everyone!

I apologize for my introduction being a bit late. This is only my second course (or third as I am taking two this term) and I am still getting things figured out. ***insert sheepish emoticon***

My name is Allison (Ally) Greig and I am from Brandon, Manitoba. I grew up in a small town close to the Saskatchewan and US border. Make no mistake, I am NOT a Rider fan! True Blue all the way!! I currently teach at George Fitton School as a literacy support teacher and facilitator of the High Ability Learner’s Enrichment Program both at the middle years level.

When choosing my image, I decided to search Reading Apprenticeship Framework and see what images returned. I am a part of the Manitoba pilot of the Reading Apprenticeship program. It has transformed my teaching and professional learning. What I thought I was doing well before, I am doing even better. My planning and teaching have more purpose and meaning. I had always thought of “text” as being very traditional and rigid. Textbooks, articles, novels, etc. My working knowledge around “texts” is a fundamental shift. Secondly, without even realizing it, I was doing most of the thinking for my students instead of the other way around. Literacy has a much more vast, intricate, and deep definition for me now.
