The History of Photography and its Uses in Education

Introduction

This video presents the history of photography from early times to the development of the early film camera. It then discusses the uses of photography in Education and its benefits to learning

Production Choice and Style

I started out wanting to use Video Scribe for this presentation as I enjoy watching them, but then decided that drawn pictures went against the theme of my assignment! Instead I used PowerPoint so that I could include real photographs that complemented my theme that photography can help us to visualize what we are trying to learn and deepen our understanding of the topic.

Challenges

Most of the challenges in this assignment were technology-related (as they generally seem to be). After I had spent many hours on my PowerPoint presentation, I tried to save it as a movie to upload it to YouTube. It ends up that PowerPoint for Mac 2011 does not actually have that option (or so I read in my research on how to fix my problem). I had to save my presentation to a jump drive, open it on my PC in PowerPoint, and save it as a video there. Then I was able to upload it. Today, as I’ve been trying to finish that in between the switches at my children’s hockey camp, the internet would not work, which brought me a great deal of stress. It did however, give me the opportunity to learn something new on my phone: how to use a personal hotspot! Always a learning experience!

Successes

I am impressed that I figured out all of the above issues myself, with a little help from Google, of course! Actual having to work to figure these issues out makes the learning much more concrete. I am also quite pleased with the finished product. There are a few spots I would have liked to cut out extended pauses, but overall, I feel it has a good flow. Does anyone know how to go about cutting out the pauses with it done in PowerPoint? I’ve done it in other apps but not this one.

  1. Hi Jennifer,

Photographs have an interesting history. It is strange to think about textbooks without pictures. Images are a really large part of education today and it seems likely that phenomena will continue to increase. I thought the project where students took modern pictures of a historical event was very interesting. It’s a great way to help make meaning from textbook information.
