A simple definition presented by Carey Jewitt about MULTIMODALITY which addresses the overall nature, history, connections, and the approaches of this new model.

“Multimodality is an inter-disciplinary approach that understands communication and representation to be more than about language. It has been developed over the past decade to systematically address much-debated questions about changes in society, for instance in relation to new media and technologies. Multimodal approaches have provided concepts, methods and a framework for the collection and analysis of visual, aural, embodied, and spatial aspects of interaction and environments, and the relationships between these”

  1. I liked your overview of multimodality. The academic models of multiliteracy show the diversity of literacies used by students in a class or institution, and also, therefore, the diversity of literacies used by educational designers and teachers. The mandala was something I hadn’t seen before; that added a new framework. I liked the diagram of the ‘networked teacher’ too, because it demonstrates how skilled and adaptable a teacher has to be, together with the amount of work required by a teacher to support and develop students to learn and use multiple literacies.
