Hypertext & Hypermedia in the Classroom

A major concept that developed during this course was the idea that literacy is changing due to digital technology.   I decided to delve further into the idea of hypertext and hypermedia after reading Bolter, chapter 3, and focused my multimedia presentation on how educators can look at hypermedia as a cognitive tool for learning.  As educators we need to investigate the effects of using hypermedia as cognitive tools on the development of the higher-order thinking skills of students.   Students are becoming quite adept at reading hypermedia text, and therefore should also be honing their skills for creating and publishing hypermedia content.

I chose to use Prezi as the medium for my presentation as it is a hypermedia web tool that is appropriate for students starting at age 13 and up.  There are thousands of hypermedia examples to explore with your students and there is a simple search function that links users to a wide variety of topics.  Presentations may be downloaded or shared if an account is created.  Please note that as students will need to create an account to use Prezi, they must have parental consent to adhere to the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act.

I have provided a list of a few tools that can be used to create hypermedia presentations.  Please share and comment below to add to the list of hypermedia production tools.  It’s always helpful to have a collaborative toolbox.

  1. Corinee,

Thanks for the great presentation. I had to get a pen out to record the wealth of resources in your presentation. Well researched and planned out.

  3. Hi Corinne,
I really liked your presentation. There was a lot of really great information about using hypertext and hypermedia with students. I think this is a very important topic because it is the new way that text communication is moving, so it is important to learn about it and some of the tools that go along with it.

  4. Hi Corinne,
Very nice use of Prezi to capture all of the research that you found! I especially appreciate your inclusion of the videos as well as the listing of hypermedia tools, I’ve been thinking for awhile, that I need to compile a complete listing of all the great tools we’ve accessed in MET.
    Well done,
    Sandra

  5. It is very nice and informative. The list of tools available in the presentation is very useful for any teacher.
