Winder, “Insignificant Things Computers can do with Language and Literature”

The French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies Research Seminar presents…

Bill Winder (FHIS), “Insignificant Things Computers can do with Language and Literature”

We are standing on the damp ground of a slow-moving tsunami composed of computer applications. This talk will present a sampling of applications that are already making unnoticed, subtle or seemingly insignificant inroads into our otherwise computer-proof university departments: not the most advanced applications that make the news, such as the android Sophia, AlphaGo, or Watson the Jeopardy whiz, but rather the mundane variety that are already under foot in our classrooms. What do these damp foreshadowings tell us about how deep the water will get?

“Examples of insignificant things computers can do with language and literature, with questions about their significance” (also to be found here)
