Home Fortification Talk

Hi everyone!

Judy has invited us all to a talk by Dr. Stanley Zlotkin – the developer of micronutrient Sprinkles – about Sprinkles and home fortification. He will be speaking during the FNH 355 class on March 25th at 4pm in WOOD 2.

Dr. Zlotkin is also the founder of the Sprinkles Global Health Initiative.
Here is some information about his background and research interests.

We hope to see you there!

Class Schedule Clarification

Hi there!

So here is the plan for the next couple of classes. There was some confusion about the class during which we would discuss individual proposals because this was pushed back one class (because of Module II presentation date changes), so we just wanted to make sure everyone was this – this will happen one week from today (see below). If you are still wondering about the schedule, an updated version of the schedule was posted earlier this month.

Bee and I will be bringing the rubrics for participation evaluation on Wednesday but please remember to bring your paper/presentation rubric ideas!

Wednesday March 2nd 2011

1  Module II class participation peer evaluation
Facilitator rubric
3  Collaboratively develop final group project rubrics (paper and presentation) *

* Reminder 1: the final group project is a detailed group proposal for a product or food science strategy to address nutrient deficiency in developing countries/regions
* Reminder 2: look up rubric ideas before class!

Facilitator Rubric

Hi everyone!

As promised, here is the facilitator rubric that Tasnia kindly drafted up for us based on the discussion we had in class about it. Please take a look and see if there are any additions or changes you would like to suggest. We will discuss the facilitator rubric as well as develop rubrics for the final group presentation and paper in class on Wednesday (so please think about this as well, as we would like everyone to have a say in how we will be graded).

Module II Class Attendance

Hey everyone,

I hope you all had a restful reading break!

Something that has come to our attention is that a few people have been unable to make it to class lately. This happens sometimes and while there are definitely valid reasons for this, we wanted to address this issue in terms of how it affects participation and peer evaluation. Because regular attendance is an important part of class participation, we wanted to make sure this was treated fairly – for example, if someone has a valid reason for being unable to attend class and has emailed Bee and me ahead of time to let us know, we want to make sure the class knows that this is what happened, as opposed to the person simply missing class without reason. Because of this, Bee and I wanted to find a place to share this information in a simple way and decided to create a page with class attendance information (accessible through the blog’s main menu or  at https://blogs.ubc.ca/fnh490/attendance/)

In particular, since regular class attendance is a part of everyone’s participation mark (which is peer evaluated), we wanted to make sure that everyone has the correct information about attendance/absences, including reasons for absences, whenever available. This will ensure that attendance is evaluated in as fair a manner as possible through the peer participation evaluations.

Thanks! See you all tomorrow!

Module II Reminders

Hi everyone!

Here are some friendly reminders for what to do for Module II classes…

For each class (if you are not facilitating):
– Read the source/paper/reading posted by group facilitating before class
– Bring your copy of the Assignment 3 grading rubric (if you have misplaced yours, you can find it here)
– Bring your Peer Evaluation sheets for Assignment 3 (except for the first class, during which Bee and I will provide them)

If your group is facilitating:
– Two days prior to your facilitation date, please post a brief reading for students to read before class
– Pick up the projector (if your group needs it) before class; return the projector after class
– Please remember to leave a few minutes at end of class for filling in the grading rubric

If you facilitated the previous class:
– The group that facilitated the previous class is in charge of collecting the completed evaluations at the end of next class and inputting the comments and grades into the Evaluation Template and forwarding the filled-in template to Bee and Chelsea
–> Examples: on Feb 9th, the Home Fortification group will collect the evaluation sheets; on Feb 21, the water & sanitation group will collect the evaluation sheets
– Groups should return the physical paper evaluations to Bee and Chelsea

As usual, let us know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

Ground Rules and Expectations

Here are the ground rules and expectations for each other that we discussed today:

  • everyone is expected to attend class regularly and on time
  • cell phones on silent
  • active listening and respect for each others’ ideas
  • active contribution to the collaborative learning process
  • assignments should be submitted on time
  • peer evaluations should be completed in an equitable manner
  • eating in class is allowed as long as it is not distracting to others in the class
  • assigned readings should be done before class

Please feel free to suggest changes or additions to our list.

Have a great first week back!

Chelsea
