Welcome to FNIS 401W: New Media Practices and Applications in Indigenous Studies!

We only have 10 classes together, so we’ll be jumping right in. Today’s class will begin with introductions and review of the syllabus. We’ll start by introducing the digital humanities and how they apply (and sometimes don’t apply) to Indigenous studies.

After introductions, we’ll start using some tools! Your first assignment will be a digital remediation of Jason Lewis’ poem “no choice about the terminology.” We will be using Twine, open-source, non-linear, storytelling software. I will walk you through the fundamentals, and then you will be responsible for creating a basic, interactive website. At the end of the project, we should have an amazing gallery of digital remediations that we can share back with Jason.

  • You can download Twine here (we will be using version 1.4.2)
  • Plain text for “no choice about the terminology” is available here: no choice about the terminology
  • Host your remediation (for free with your Twitter account) here
