Digital Exhibition

Omeka is a a free, open source content management system (CMS) for online digital collections focused on display. Omeka uses Dublin Core metadata standards, “an initiative to create a digital ‘library card catalog’ for the Web.”

Over the next two classes, in small groups, you will learn Dublic Core and develop an Omeka exhibition for Indigitization, “a B.C. based collaborative initiative between Indigenous communities and organizations, the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, the Museum of Anthropology, Northern BC Archives (UNBC), and the School for Library, Archival and Information Studies, to facilitate capacity building in Indigenous information management.”

In today’s class, we will be joined by founding members of Indigitization and introduced to the photo archive we will be working with. We will also be reviewing and analyzing the Omeka exhibition, Colored Conventions in order to see what Omeka is capable of, particularly in social justice contexts.
