Background

The Fraser River is British Columbia’s longest river, providing habitat to the world’s largest salmon runs (The Fraser River Basin, n.d.). Its basin is also home to more than 60% of the population of British Columbia, and is the site of numerous fisheries, agricultural fields, and active mines. Due to this substantial urbanization, it is facing alarming ecological degradation.

Flood infrastructure along the lower Fraser River is blocking off over 1400 km worth of potential salmon rearing habitat (Azeez, 2018). The infrastructure can be upgraded or replaced to be more “Fish-Friendly”, allowing for salmon to pass through and improving the water quality.
