Distinguished Lecture, March 22 2016

Annually, GeoRox is proud to host our Distinguished Lecture event. This event focuses on bringing students, faculty, and industry members together to learn about different aspects within the field of geological engineering. This year, in line with UBC’s centennial anniversary, we featured two of our own professors; Dr. Oldrich Hungr and Dr. Leslie Smith. Both of them are long-time contributors and well respected members of the UBC geological engineering community. The talks were great and we thank everyone who came out. We would also like to thank our VP-Internal Jeremy Huber for putting together this fantastic event. We hope to see you next year!

GeoRox Overnight Annual Field Trip, October 2015

This year we traveled to Pemberton to visit a drill and blast tunneling project. It was a great opportunity for all years to visit a site such as this and learn about the industry.

The field trip was a great success! 15 GeoRox students embarked on the adventure of a lifetime up to the Upper Lillooet Hydro Project north of Pemberton. We received a full site tour, and got to enter two separate tunnels! Aside from the site, we visited a fresh debris flow site along with the Meager Landslide, Canada’s second largest landslide at 50 000 cubic meters. Everyone came home with a smile on their face and a renewed appetite for engineering.

GeoRox would like to thank the Tunnelling Association of Canada, CRT-ebc, Innergex Renewable Energy, Golder Associates, and lastly our VP Internal, Jeremy Huber, for making this event possible.

Big Silver Creek Hydroelectric Project Field Trip, March 28th 2015

Early on Saturday the 28th, 13 students from GeoRox travelled to Agassiz to visit the Big Silver Creek run-of-river hydro project. A bus was supplied to the remote site near the North-east end of Harrison Lake. Students were given a tour of the headrace tunnel construction, the generator house construction  and an overview of the project’s design and construction considerations.
