For the next 4 weeks up to 175 Geog. students will be here researching the environmental and cultural history of the areas around Vancouver’s old streams. Tim has laid out the principal map and atlas resources for this assignment under signage on top of the map cabinets, and most students should be able to use these materials without staff help.

There are other suggested sources on their reading list, however, such as Canadian Newstand and several books, so you may get reference questions. Feel free to “plunge in”, time permitting, or refer students to Tim, at your option. Journal article searches in Geobase, Ac. Search Premier, America History & Life and Urban Studies Abstracts could also be useful.

Heads up for an assignment in Classical Studies 105. The students (more than 100) need the call number range for greek and roman archaeology, and the call ‘letters’ for ancient greek or roman politics and culture. I took the student to the LC site to look at call number ranges.

You may be seeing some Anthropology 232 (Ancient Latin America) students at the desk. There are about 90 students registered.
For their first assignment, they have to compare a scholarly and a popular article on the same archaeological site or civilization (Aztecs, Maya, Zapotec, Inca, Chimor).
The best resource to use is Academic Search Complete; show them how to refine to scholarly or popular using the sidebar limiters. They also have a list of popular journals to use such as National Geographic and Archaeology (ISSN 0003-8113). Limiting the search to a particular journal works well, especially Nat’l Geog.
If they’re struggling to find a topic, we have an excellent online encyclopedia, The Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures to get them started: http://www.oxford-mesoamerican.com/
(On the Anthro Subject Guide under Reference resources > Archaeology)
They can do a search for a culture or site of interest and use the bibliography at the end for article suggestions. The biblio includes popular sources, esp. National Geographic, and it has the eLink for quick access.

The students will need to go to Canadian journal and newspaper indexes.
The only data requirements are for price indexes which can be found for provinces and CMAs in CANSIM.

Students in LIBR 503, introduction to reference, have a variety of reference questions they need to answer. Aleteia is teaching the course this semester, and she has kindly provided an ANSWER KEY! for her assignments. I have put them in the assignment binder.

Hi all
History 305 assignment: they need to use the BC Newspaper Index (the microfilm version) and print off a page from the microfilm on a topic of interest. Can be any topic of their choice. Students I helped today found it useful to browse the BC Provincial Library Newspaper Index Subjects to find a topic. Located in microform reference, 2 volumes, call number Z695 B696 1969.

Students in one section of PS 101 are looking for election campaign pamphlets and advertisements. For students doing older elections (1911 has come up twice so far today) browsing by date in the Globe and Mail (election date of September 21st I think) for the month before seemed to work. The editorial page (page 6) has election cartoons that they can use.
Also Maclean’s in microfilm, browsing by date, but no takers for that so far.
RBSC does have election pamphlets available, not sure how far back they go. The catalogue record says “Elections: federal, provincial or municipal”, and basically they are filed by date and level of government.

CAP students (12 groups of 25 each) will be working on this Treasure Hunt assignment over the next couple of weeks. Julie Mitchell and I are co-teaching the sessions and we will be putting up the envelopes and taking them down after each session. We will tell the students to be considerate of others in the building but if you see too much horseplay, please let me know and we’ll revise the assignment.
Thanks everyone!

Students in Geography 270 will be coming in until April 10 to ask for “ALR” maps. These are detailed maps of the GVRD’s Agricultural Land Reserve boundaries for 1974 and 1981. I have placed all relevant maps on top of the map cabinets under appropriate signage. Students are welcome to photocopy these maps, but may not sign them out. Their professor will make arrangements with me for oversized scanning if it proves necessary.
Feel free to refer students to me if necessary.

Hi everyone
The students in LIBR 530, Advanced Reference, have created a wonderful collection of online guides to various subject areas. They are worth taking a look at, and if you can think of ways to use them or link to them beyond posting here, do let me know. You need a password to view these, and it is reference.
